Hi, all -

The Nikkormat and 24/2.8 arrived late last week.  Spent some time messing with the 24 to fix the loose focus ring, but ultimately decided I'd better test it first to see if it was worth the effort.

Now, I've wanted a 24 since I was new to photography, reading John Shaw books.  And the I got the Nikkormat only because the 24 was so accessible.  So, I bought into a new system.

Boy, am I glad I did.

Took the camera out this morning through a few favorite haunts in Birdsboro.  Light was a bit harsh, but I went anyway.  These are all between f/5.6 and f/16.

The camera's a beaut.  Meter seems about right, maybe over exposing a half stop or so, but I'm using a 1.4V battery, so that might be the issue.  Easy enough to fix.  The ergonomics are so nice that I'm actually pondering selling my M42 gear.  This camera is that nice to use.

The 24/2.8 is probably the sharpest 35mm lens I've ever owned, surpassing my beloved Canon 28mm EF.  Just brutally sharp.  I love it.  The perspective is intuitive, and absolutely fun.  Requires a little attention to keep shadows out of the frame, but I'm loving it.

The film was Rite Aid 200, developed and scanned at CVS.  Last couple times I went to CVS, the scans were horrible.  I commented to that effect to the 20 yr-old tech today, and he gave me the best scanning I've ever gotten from a lab.  For $5 total.  I'm a happy camper.

One sad note, though: The 200+ foot tall water tower in Birdsboro, that's been a favorite subject for years and has stood over the town for an extremely long time, has apparently been demo'ed.  It's gone.  I'm truly bummed about it, too.  But considering how much fun I had with the Nikkormat and the 24, I think I'll survive. cool

Thanks for looking.

35mm format!  Large format!  Newer cameras!  Older cameras!  Ready-made lenses!  Home-made lenses!

Oh, make up yer dang mind!   rolleyes

P.S. those pics are really nice.  You need a lens hood, judging from the flare on that Galaxie pic.

I kind like the effect on that shot with the hexes, but yeah, a hood might be a good investment. Guess we know who'll be chasing the Nikon ads now Smiley I hear the Nikon 50/1.4 is a dream of a lens too. Almost as a good as the Canon one <G,D & R>

Good shots, Scott. Maybe this will be the boost you've been looking for.

Thanks, guys.  Yeah, need a hood.  Checking eBay now.  But the lens and camera are keepers.  Now I have to decide if I'm keeping the Spotmatic kit... rolleyes

[EDIT] Looks like I need an HN-1 hood.  About $6 on eBay from Hong Kong, which doesn't help me for this weekend.  Think I need to post some quick WTB ads all over...

Um......Yeah...... I'm gonna need that lens back.    cool

That sucker is "wicked" sharp.   Little higher perspective on the Galaxie and I could read the VIN!

Really like the last one.

Scotty: go here to see Jay Javier's page on DIY lens hoods.  A clever fellow like you could do one up a treat.  Wink

Nice shots.

What's the filter ring size on that lens? I have a few odds and ends hanging around. And I think Adorama stocks a bundle of generic hoods that work well. They have them in ultra wide so you don't get vignetting.

I really like the 24mm focal length, especially on SLRs where it is easier to make sure you are filling the frame.

That lens takes the Nikon "standard" 52mm.  The Nikkor 24 is just a beautiful lens -- one that Nikon got right from the very beginning.  And I love 24mm as a focal length.  Wonderful shots, Scott.  Try some extreme closeups, like with flowers.

(And don't you love the sound of the shutter on the Nikkormat?  Very distinctive.)

I don't have a 52mm hood. Oh well.

Maybe you could make one out of wood? That would be kind of cool. cool

It takes the standard 52mm hood?  Scott, I've got several of those, and I can ship one out to you before the weekend if you say the word.

Jorn - thanks for looking.

Pete - if you have a wide angle one, I'll take it.  But no rush on getting it out.  Lemme know how much you want fer it.

Phew - got the 24 back together...

[EDIT] Aw, crap.  Messed up the alignment of the helical.  Doesn't focus now - have to recollimate it. This is gonna suck. Sad

[EDIT] Phew - got it lined up correctly again.  Think, unless someone points me to pic-by-pic directions, I'm leaving this one alone.  Or sending it off, if it's cheap enough.  Sloppy-but-working is better than paperweight.

The 1st shot of Ford is wonderful. I like the comparison of the old car & row homes with the satellite dishes. I have a 24mm in a Canon FD that's wonderful.

Congrats on that set Scott. The 24/2.8 is my favorite Nikkor and Nikkormats are indeed great to use, although somewhat... different.
