Ok, just found out we're going to NYC this weekend.  Empire State Building, Central Park, the whole shebang.  So, what camera(s) to bring?!

My first inclination is to bring the Yashica-Mat loaded with Reala.  But I just finished rehabbing the Speedex Rangefinder with the Solinar - if it tests out fine tomorrow, maybe bring that, with Reala.  And Acros.  And I still have the Spotmatic.

UGH!

Any rationalizations would be appreciated... shocked

Too bad the Seneca isn't ready Smiley I'd take the Speedex & a pile of Reala, if that's any help.

With the results you posted a few weeks ago from the Speedex, I would agree with William but I would also pack the Canon DLSR for color...a

Well, the wife will have her Canon digicam, so I doubt I'll bring the 20D (although, the 20D and 17-40L is always good on these trips...).   I'm taking the kids fishing this afternoon, and am bringing the Speedex and Acros with to test out the focus and rangefinder.  When it passes that test, maybe it'd be good to bring to NYC.

Oh, I dunno... Huh?

Scott, here is a simple, fool-proof method of choosing:

Lay out several cameras that you'd like to take on your kitchen table and leave the room.  Ask your wife to mix them up and call you back in, either blindfolded or with your eyes closed (no fair peeking!).  The first camera(s) you lay your hands on is/are the one(s) you take.

The very randomness of it will free up your mind for other, more important things.  Give it a try, you'll come to the realization that you were supposed to bring that camera.

It may be just me, but I don't have much fun as a tourist (with family) when lugging lots of 'serious' gear. I would take the Spotmatic (or something akin, in my case an Olympus OM) and maybe an extra lens in the cargo pocket of my shorts.  No camera bag.  YMMV.

I am with James here. My last time in NYC I took the Contax and a Rolleiflex... and I shot a grand total of 8 frames with the R'flex.
The lighter I travel, the more I enjoy... and the pics don't seem to suffer one bit.

Another vote for one or max two, light, small cameras. Bring something wide! 28 or 35mm are good focal length in cities.  In your place I'd go with an XA2 or similar gear, maybe a 120 folder for backup,

Ok, this is where I'm landing right now: First, I don't really do camera bags.  If I can't pocket it, or hang it around my neck, I don't like to bring it.  Large format notwithstanding.  Now, I packed the Y-Mat all around London for over a week.  Very happy with the results, and was a great time using it.  That said, the test roll from the Solinar-equipped Speedex is drying, and the negatives look brutally sharp.  Way impressed with that.  There are a couple glitches to correct with th camera yet (the rangefinder is a little off on the vertical alignment, and the shutter release needs a little work), but I'm really happy with what it did this morning.  Would love to see what it can do with Reala.  But, regardless of what anyone says, this thing is not comfortable to carry around in a pocket.  I'm not sure if I have a case for it right now - need to go look.

So, the decision is coming down to timing (whether or not I can get the Speedex fixed today) and portability.  The Spottie is tempting, but I don't want to cart around even one extra lens, and I don't want to mess with 35mm.  Maybe.  rolleyes

Well, nice as the Speedex is turning out, I won't have time to tweak anything before the trip.  So it's the Y-Mat.  Or the Speedex.  6x6 or 35mm?! Huh?

Since I know everyone's on the edge of their seats... tongue

Maddie looked at both cameras and said, "You always bring the Yashica.  Bring the other one this time." So, it's 35mm and the Spotmatic, with some combination of 28/35/55 Tak glass.  I don't have the 85, and the 135 is more than I want to carry.  Think I'll pack all three, and maybe the wife would be willing to carry two in her purse... rolleyes

Well, after much hemming and hawing, I ended up taking the Spotmatic and the 35/3.5 SMC Tak with to NYC.  Ended up shooting about a roll and a half of Fuji/Rite-Aid color.  The focal length seemed fine.  I'll be taking the film to get processed and scanned tomorrow.  Had a great time sightseeing with the family, and the Spotmatic was a blast to use.

Well a 35mm is a great lens that many overlook and that 3.5 was one of the best ever made. I had the 2.8 and hated how it looked wide open but a stop down and wow.
