Modern Lenses & Manufacturing Tolerances

While this basically says what everyone who shoots cameras sort of understands experientially already, I thought it said it clearly and concisely.

The final quote is a good one:
Quote
I suspect the full-frame manufacturers are going to call a halt at 30 Mpix or so, just because there’s no sense in it: they’re already outresolving the quality control of their best lenses.
That's, I think, what I was seeing in my fanatical lens testing (
Pt.1
and
Pt. 2
) recently.

Interesting, thanks for the link.
I wonder if it's always been that way and the reason people notice now is that it's so easy to blow something up on a monitor and scrutinize it. And it's so easy to compare images with others who have the same camera/lens.
Kind of disheartening to think the end user has to verify the quality of the product they bought.

I think you're right, Alan. I mean, how many viewers do you walking into a gallery with a loupe, examining prints?

Acceptably sharp, but not critically focused.

I hate to say this but though I don't take a loupe I will get right up to it then walk back.
