Hi, all -

Last weekend was a good one.  Started out a little funky, though: On Friday, my son and I hatched a plan to take a walk in Birdsboro.  I wanted to run some Pan-F through the Yashica-Mat (in order to try some caffenol-c), and I asked Braedan if he'd like to use the camera and shoot some images himself.  He said yes, and I was geeked.

Well, Saturday morning came, and is the wont of an almost-ten-year-old, he changed his mind.  I was pissed.  Wrecked the day for me.  My wife reminded me that photography is my thing, not necessarily his.  She was right, of course, but I was really looking forward to the chance to share it with him.

Well, Sunday dawned better, and the day went well.  Side note: I need to lose weight.  It was a beautiful, if cold, day, and my wife suggested the boy and I take the dogs for a walk in order to get some exercise.  Amazingly, Braedan was amenable.  I suggested we go to the Daniel Boone Homestead and walk some trails.  He suggested bringing his camera to shoot.  I brought along my Yashica-Mat (loaded with Fuji Pro 160C this time), and we packed up one of the Bostons.

It was a cold, windy day, but beautiful.  I didn't really notice the weather; it was one of those father/son moments you always hope for.  The whole time, Braedan was taking pictures, saying how great it was to be walking together, and that we need to start doing this weekly or more.  Don't need to tell me twice.

Anyway, his card gave out (it was mostly full, and his HP Photosmart 315 doesn't allow much capacity, anway), we loaded the dog in the truck, and headed home for some hot chocolate.  We reviewed his images; these are some he was especially proud of:

I'm hopeful that this becomes a routine for us, and that he has found a new outlet for his pre-teen expression needs.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks, Scott -- you've reminded me that I need to post a few of the Christmas pics my 7-year-old shot with his new Leica Mini.  I'll get to that in a couple of days.  Seriously, I'm such a procrastinator, it's like I'm afraid of Saturday the 14th.

Well done, Braedan (and Scott).  Nice subject matter, good compositions, and a great time together.  What more could you ask for?

Scott,

Braendan has every right to feel proud of his work.  The two of the buildings are my favorites.

Just curious to know, did he choose his own subject matter and the place to stand? Or did he trail behind you and take the same shots? If it were the former, he's thinking in diagonals, which is mighty precocious in my book.

Is he interested in fixing things like his Dad? Is he allowed to use any power tools in your shop?

I encouraged both my sons to use any of my cameras from their 1st grade on, but neither sustained their early interest in photography; ditto for fishing. Writing and playing music was more to their interest and for many years playing sports took top priority for our older son, Marc.. Both kept up their interest in performing music through adulthood, Marc still sings in clubs at least a few times a month. He turned 57 five days ago.

Got my son a digital for Christmas I hope he takes the hint the next time we go out and I say "Hey why don't you bring your camera? He has already learned to take pictures of nose hairs from across the room. My Film using daughter is away and when she is here she works more than me.....

Your son did beautifully; those are pretty advanced exercises for his age - he can see lines and textures.

I used to do much the same thing with my dad once in a while, back in the early 1960s...

Thanks, everyone.  My photos aren't even sent out yet, but that hardly matters.  Braedan is itching to go again, and that's the greatest thing.

In fact, we're going again tomorrow.  He's bringing his HP; I've got to decide between the Spotmatic and some old Ektar 25, or the Speedex and some Pro 400H.  Ah, it's nice to have such a conundrum... cool

Have a good weekend, everyone!

[EDIT] Ok - solved that problem.  Loaded both cameras!
