I use a lot the "show unread posts since last visit" option, at the top, in order to keep track of what's happening in the forum. It is an important feature, since it is hard to check what's new by looking at each individual forum.

Lately (since yesterday or so), when I try that option I get an empty list - and it is easy to check that there are many new posts. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it an intentional change, or should I just do something else to get the new posts?

Standard search seems to work, but I must choose a topic to search, it does not allow a blank search just limited by time of posting.

It's working for me. Have you updated any software? Made any related changes to configs?

The "Show unread posts" hasn't worked for me since the 2 or 3 week of this new server.  I'm too uniformed to see if there's a setting to change to make it work.

Now having tried it since I posted the above, it seems to be working.  Gotta love computers.

My experience is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  It is a very useful feature when it is working, such as today.

It was not working since Tuesday in the two machines I use, no software changes nor updates, at least that I'm aware of.

Now the unread posts feature is working OK, at least in the machine I'm using right now. Obviously it is not a general problem, but somehow related to some machines and not to others.

The only possible cause I can think of is that my country changed to DST last Sunday (we advanced 1 hour and now are at UTC -2). Maybe that messed up some time check in the server. Both of my XP machines did the change automatically for the first time in my life - it seems that Big Brother Bill is now tracking all of the DST changes in the planet.

Thanks for the attention, Boss!

This is something I've noticed since we shifted to the new site.  There could be a moment when I see 7 or 8 new posts, and I might read one or two of them and leave the site, and when I come back later, I see the notification of "no new posts since last visit", even though there were 5 or 6 that I hadn't read.  It does this on both computers I use on a regular basis.

The "new replies to your posts" doesn't do this.

It usually works for me. Occasionally I have to click the link instead of just refreshing. I usually refresh several times a day if I'm not out for the whole day or away.

Ditto what Pete said.  It seems like the software counts something as read if you could have read it, even if you actually did not.

James, there must be a Zen factor that Craig didn't count on when signing us up for SMF: "the posts that might be read."

The "show unread posts" function works on my newer lap top (Vista) but doesn't work on my older desk top (XP).  Doesn't make sense to me.

I've tested now in the other machine I use (at work, the first one is at home) and the "unread posts" feature does not work.

I'm going to make sure that my profile has the right time difference set (it was set to 0 hours difference, by default) to eliminate that possible cause.

It has never worked for me since going on the new software. I have an XP machine.

Do me a favor, guys, and switch your layout to SMF Default Theme - Core, which is what I'm using. Once you've done that. See if the Unread link works for you.

The feature has been consistently working well in my home machine since Tuesday (I've always been in the default layout). Both my home and work machines use XP.

How does one do this, Craig?  I went to "Look and Layout" in my profile, don't see it happening there. Save me some time, please.
