Guys and gals, I believe I've found a decent solution for live forum-related chat!

http://nelsonfoto.com/SMF/shoptalk/

If not already logged-in on the forums, you'll need to log in to Chat using your NFf userid/pwd combo and you'll find various channels to pick from, all mirroring current forums categories. As a general rule, use the Public channel, though I assume you could arrange to meet on one of the other channels as needed. Frankly, I think it's overkill and the chat should be limited to a single channel, something I'll attempt to solve ASAP.

For now, feel free to play around with it.

One more thing: the chat is built on AJAX and Flash and requires, to my knowledge, Flash 9 in order to access. Users of WebTV might find they cannot access it, and same goes for folks using MACs with outdated Flash or OS versions needing upgraded before installing the Flash player.

Cheers!
Craig

I also agree with the idea that the channels be limited to 2 or 3, but no more.

I'm looking for code solutions to remove the extra channels. For now, stick with the default, public channel.

A hint: Keep the chat open in a separate window or browser tab while surfing the forums. You should hear a sound when somebody else logs in, thus allowing you to enjoy the forums while waiting for others to access chat.

I've set the chat software time-out at 15 mins. Will bump that out if you all think it necessary. If you note people logging off when you log in, understand you are viewing the alert from a time-out and not witnessing somebody leaving as soon as you enter.

As example:

(13:52:00) martolod: we have timing issues i believe
(13:53:05) ChatBot: martolod rolls 1d6 and gets 6.
(15:10:12) ChatBot: nelsonfoto logs into the Chat.
(15:10:15) ChatBot: martolod has been logged out (Timeout).

I know Martolod wasn't "there" when I logged in. I'm only seeing the system alert that he left earlier, even though the time-stamp indicates he left 3 secs after I entered.

C.

Also, I'm in chat now if any wishes to test it out with somebody actually on there.
