Hi, all -

Well, in my quest for instant gratification, I decided that a press camera was too slow, and that Sandeha's fixed focus Neretta would be the 4x5 point-and-shoot to satisfy me.  I started planing wood yesterday.  Mine's sized a bit differently - I'm making the back to accomodate a Graflock:

Today I started building the front "nosecone" which acts as a rigid bellows:

Added the first pieces of the front standard a little while ago:

Need to build the light trap and add some odds and ends, then will have a functioning large format hyperfocal point-and-shoot! :woot:

More to come...

I love watching the evolution of a normal person into a large format masoquist!

Cool - hyperfocal distance depends on aperture, so which were you planning to be the largest aperture reaching infinity?

Well, it depends on lens.  I'm working at getting an Angulon 90 or similar, which would give me infinity around f/22-f/32, depending on which DoF calculator you want to believe.  Until I procure said lens, though, it'll be the 105 Tessar.  Infinity when stopped all the way down to f/36.

Main thing I want this camera (and the sync'd Angulon) for, though, is indoor snapshooting with flash.  Set it and forget it.  minimum focus at f/16 will be 5' or so.  Perfectamundo.

Well, I got the light trap installed, seams sealed, lensboard clips installed, lens installed (the 105 Tessar for now - there's a 90 Angulon on the way! :toocool:) and Graflock installed:

I'll install the tripod mount tomorrow and get an idea where the focus on this thing sits.  But there's an image on the ground glass, and by about f/18 or so, everything in the garage is sharp!

When Sandeha built his, I also made one. I just shortened it to accomodate a shorter focal length lens. I had orignally made it for a 121mm Weitwinkel Anastigmat but now it's 90mm. There should be a picture of it here somewhere, unless I deleted it from Photobucket. My hyperfocal distance card says for 90mm, 19 feet at f/11 will give plenty of wiggle room to get everything from a few feet to infinity in acceptable focus. The Angulon may have smaller aperture settings than my lenses, so you should be way safe. Another thought -- I wish everything in my garage was sharp.........:2yippee:

I kept your shot, Glenn ...

I've hardly used mine ... too many toys is not much of a good excuse, I know, but I'll load it again soon.

Aw, man - I sniped you, Craig!  Sorry, bud - I use software - set it and forget it.

'Nother aw man - Glenn's is so purty I feel another iteration coming on, and I haven't even finished the first.  I'll work out the kinks with Mk.II, and refine the appearance with Mk.III...

Well, I got the front glued together and light-sealed yesterday, tung oiled the mahogany.  The paint on the cone was either too old or too cold; either way, impatience won out, and I gave it a wash with naphtha and rubbed it out with steel wool.  Gives it a nice distressed look that goes well with the old lens on it right now.

Near as I can figure, it focuses at about 60' or so, so I should have sharpness down to about 11-1/2' at f/25.  Not bad, but the 90 Angulon should be even better. Cheesy

All that's left is the flash bracket grip and the viewfinder.

Ok, so I made my son stand at the end of a loooong tape.  I get him in as sharp of focus as I can tell between about 65' and 72'.  According to the DoF Master, I should be able to shoot from 20' at f/18 and get a sharp image from there to infinity.

Gonna go try this...

Actually if you shoot to the 20' mark you should get from 10.5' on in clear focus.  20.5' is the hyperfocal distance that would give you 10.25' to inf in focus. Thats what I get at 105 fl with f18 and 70 ft..... Hmmm, wait a minute we have a fixed lens here. Guessin you are correct then Smiley
